Introduction

You have perms.log file generated from a scan done using Grim’s Ping or one posted on a FXP board. You want to take these pubs and see if they still work, if another group is using them, if they allow upload/download, can be FXPed to and their speed.

Necessary Tools

  • SmartFTP – Very fast directory listing and navigation. Allows for multiple connections.
  • Personal FTP – Only needed if you don’t have a good upload rate yourself and if you want to check whether or not the pub can to FXPed to.
  • Text Editor - Your favorite text editor, Notepad works.

Installation & Setup

SmartFTP is already all setup as soon as installed. The only thing you may want to change is the proxy setting, the default is not to use a proxy. If you want to use a proxy go to "Tools", then "Settings", then select the "Proxy" tab. Select "SOCKS 4" or "SOCKS 5". Enter the IP address below beside the word "Host" and enter "1080" for the port. Don’t check "Login to proxy" unless you are using a private proxy that requires a username and password. If you can’t get access to a personal FTP you can run your own as long as your upload rate is at least 40KB/sec. However for this tutorial we will assume you have access to a someone else’s private FTP server.

Layout

If you intend to verify and tag a large number of pubs then the layout in which you have your programs can considerably decrease the time it takes to check them. Split your screen in two halves. One side have SmartFTP, and the other have the list of pubs. Have Notepad open and leave it in your taskbar so you can record tagged pubs with their information.

Verification

Simply copy an IP from the list of pubs (start from the top and work your way down so you don’t do the same IP twice) and paste it into the "Address" bar in SmartFTP. Repeat until you have 3 FTP’s open in SmartFTP. Then connect to your personal ftp. Now you will have 4 boxes open and it is still easy to see everything.

Order of Operations

  1. Connect to the pub and see if the pub still up. Can you connect or do you get an error?
  2. Check if there are any other tags on the pub. If so are they older than 3 weeks?
  3. Tag the pub. Make a folder containing the word "tag", and in the nested folders include your boards name, the scanners name, and your name.
  4. Test the speed of the pub. Transfer a file from your personal FTP by dragging and dropping it into the pub window. Use 200kb, 500kb, or 1mb file to test the speed.
  5. Record the pub, your tagged path, and the speed of a file transfer.
