Introduction

FXPing (also known as filling) is the food that feeds the FXP scene, where scanning is it's blood. It works on a pretty simple level, by transferring files from one server to another without actually acquiring the files yourself. Why would we do this? The answer to that is: one, anyone can FXP. A person on a 56k modem will be able to FXP at the same speed at anyone else, giving it a wide area of user base. Two, it's faster. It eliminates the need for you to download then go and upload the files, virtually save up to hours of work. It also can be faster than your connection allows if the two servers you are transferring to and from are fast enough. Now the idea is probably looking quite prospective to you, so read on to find out how to FXP.

What You Need

  • FlashFXP - Program makes it quite easy to FXP if you know what to do
  • One FXPable server - Most of the time this is not a pub. Some do allow FXP out, but generally you will be looking at Topsites or Dumps. If you do not have a fxpable server you may use a wingate. To find out how go to jtp10181's FAQ on Wingates.

FXPing

1. Let's start by opening up FlashFXP, which will be located in your start menu after installing it.

2. Now FlashFXP should startup to a screen looking similar to this:

3. The first thing we want to make sure is that both of the highlighted buttons are not depressed, as shown below:

This button is called the local browser button. It simply enables you to either connect to two ftp servers or you can directly upload by depressing one and not the other 4. Next we are going to login to the first FTP server. It does not matter, which we are going into yet.

4. Start by pressing the one of the lightning symbols on the bar, or by going (FTP>Quick Connect). A window will pop-up similar to the one shown below.

Server or URL - In here you either must put in a ip address in the format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (example: 24.56.123.12) or you may also put in a dynamic address, which is a web-address that forwards to the ftp ip address. (example: http://servername.dhs.org).  In the newer FlashFXP You can also put a full ftp path here (example: ftp://24.56.123.12/path/here/)

User Name - This is where you will put in a username if you have been designated one by an administrator. If you do not have a username leave this field blank.

Password - This is where you will put in the password associated with your username, once again this must be assigned to you by the system administrator. If you do not have a password then leave this field blank.

Remote Path - This is the path you wish FlashFXP to automatically enter upon connection of that particular FTP server. Example, if I wish to enter the directory '/cookies/are/good/' I would type in the path into the Remote Path field and FlashFXP will automatically enter that directory for me upon connection of the server.

Anonymous - This is when you do not have a username and password assigned to you. The anonymous account will only work if it has been activated on the servers computer.

Port - This is the port you wish to connect to on the IP address or dynamic address of the server. The default port address for FTP is 21, but the system administrator of the FTP may set this to a near infinite of numbers as long as it is not reserved by another protocol. Example, a FTP server should not run on port 80 because that is for HTTP (web pages).

5. Next we click on the advanced tab after filling in all the required information on the general tab. Once here we will put a check into 'Alternate FXP Method : Uploading and Downloading'. Look below if you get lost. After this is done press the connect button.

6. You should come up with a listing of files and directories once you have connected to the ftp, it will look similar to the picture on the below-left. If it does not connect it will quite a message like the message below-right.

7. Now we are going to connect to the other server that you will be using to transfer the files. Looking to the above left you should notice the left column is blank. What we are going to do is simply press the lightning button on top of the blank column. After this we will press quick connect. Now this should look familiar to you. Repeat steps 4-6 to connect to your other server. Once finished you should have two unique ftp server directory listings in both the left and right columns as shown below.

8. Now that we have both ftp servers connected it becomes fairly easy. If we are already in the correct directories we are transferring to and from then skip this step and go on to step nine. If you are just in root directories you must get to the right directories. Some of these directories are locked so we simply cannot enter it manually. Do do this we will enter the full directory, that you should have from the original posting of the ftp, in the address bar. Look below to see where it is.

9. Once you have entered into the correct directory it is time to transfer the files. We will first highlight the files or directories we wish to transfer. Next we will right click the files then left-click queue (below-left) Once put into queue each file that you put in the queue will appear in the bottom left column of FlashFXP (below-right). The files are now ready to be transferred.

10. Now all you must do is right-click the files in queue and left-click the transfer button. (below left) Once this is done the files should begin to transfer; however, please take note that you will not be able to gauge the speed of the transfer until it has completed. Once it is transferring it should look something like the image below and to the right.

Conclusion

Well that's it folks, if you get any error messages or the file won't transfer there are two possibilities: one, you have done something wrong, or two one of the ftp has bounce attack on (a FXP blocking method.) There are more ways to do this, but this is a getting started tutorial, which is only teaching the basics of FXPing. A more in depth tutorial will be released at a later date.
